Directing: Importance As An Aspect Of Management

Directing refers to instructing, guiding, communicating and inspiring people, so that objectives can be achieved.In the process of directing, the employees are given instructions and guidance to achieve a goal or objective.They are trained to develop communication and are inspired to achieve their objectives.

Importance of Directing:

Directing is very important for every organization.The essentials of directing are as follows:

  1. It makes an action start or begin-   every employee is appointed upto planning, staffing and organizing in a company.But, they cannot start working unless they are given dirctions like, how to do ? and what to do ?

  2. It forms coordination among the employees-   many employees work in an organization.it is complusory to have cooperation and coordination among them.
    Hence, the Manager supervises them and gives them directions on how to do a particular task and in which is the best manner to perform the task.

  3. It helps in motivation-   directing motivates the staff to do their tasks rightly with dedication and the feeling of belonging to a family unit.

  4. It helps in bringing about changes in the organizational structure-   the employees are able to adapt to changing strategies at work and different tasks due to directing which helps in bringing changes in the organizational structure.

  5. It helps in creating balance-   directing helps in creating a balance in the organization by motivation, cooperation, coordination, promotion, salary increments and perks, etc.

Characteristics of Directing:

  1. Directing makes an action or task begin.

  2. It takes place at every level of management-   every manager, top executive, to the supervisor performs the function of directing.Directing takes place wherever superior-subordinate relationships exist.

  3. Directing is a continuous activity.It takes place everyday in all organizations across the globe.

  4. Directing firstly begins from the top most level in organization hierarchy.It starts with the orders and instructions by the top-level managers to the group managers, then from the group managers to the subordinate staff, and finally from the subordinate staff to the supervisors who make sure that the task is done accurately and to perfection.It means that the orders are given by the boss and his subordinates at every level of management follow them religiously in order to achieve organizational goals.

Directing is an important function of management which begins from the top-level managers to the supervisors in relation to an assigned task which is given after division of labour and subsequent delegation of authority to each employee according to his skill and intellect to outperform his competitors at work in a specific arena of the assigned task.This makes directing a vital aspect of organizational management.
